An Exhibitions Producer for the New Art Exchange in Nottingham, UK, called Saziso Phiri heard about me through working with my daughter and asked me if I would be interested in creating and delivering a Writing Social workshop for #4UBU (SEE DETAILS HERE)
‘The title #4UBU is purposefully non-specific, ‘U’ could stand for ‘You’ or ‘Us’. This translates to a universally open space. Yes, this is a platform to express the joys of Black life in multiple forms and allows all members of the “Black community” in all of its intersections to share openly in a safe and unified space, but it is also a place for people of colour and White individuals to be a part of too.
Saziso gave me rough lines on which to build the workshop. I chose to concentrate on haiku poems, acrostic, because they are short and snappy. I included metaphors, similes’ and personification so that they will understand how to use them and bring life to their writing. I incorporate affirmations because I believe that they could use them to bring positivity and better their everyday lives.
On the day of the workshop I arrived early and went through things and made sure that my handouts were in order and the participants began to arrive.
I am pleased to say I facilitated a Writing Social Workshop at the NAE on 21st August 2021, which was very successful. The theme was on Nature.
A man and his 2 daughters came along and some other young people, plus my daughter @thehoneyeffect and @theantigallery, they all participated. We made affirmations, wrote and read Acrostic, Haiku poems, and created nature based stories about Tigers, landscapes, planting trees, fathers, the environment and being sharks and much more!
We read and analysed Rudyard Kipling’s famous poem ‘IF’ and analysed art by Honey Williams which they thoroughly enjoyed and would like to come again.
